Development Studies
Together with other research institutes established at Aas, UMB provides state-of-the-art knowledge based on a broad range of disciplines. UMB's main objectives are:
- To be a major player in the field of life sciences, focusing on the core disciplines:
- biology, food and environmental science
- land use and natural resource management
- as well as associated aesthetic and technical subjects
- To actively contribute to business development and continue to strengthen the scientific basis for agriculture, aquaculture and other industries based on the utilisation of natural resources.
A broad range of study programmes are offered at Bachelor, Master and PhD level.

| Programme description | The programme gives students a holistic understanding of social change and human development combined with economic, biological and technological knowledge for innovation, resource management and environmental protection in developing countries.; Study plans are tailored individually to meet special interests of students. Core courses address issues of development theory, poverty, environment and collective action. In addition to these courses, students can choose from a variety of subjects, such as ecotechnology, anthropology, tropical ecology, economics, agriculture, gender and rural development. One semester is normally spent in a developing country for field courses and field research work. The degree is granted on the basis of course work and a research thesis. ; About half of the students are international. The programme prepares students for employment with ministries, development aid agencies, education, research institutions, media and consulting companies. |

| Formal prerequisites | Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, e.g., development studies, natural resource management, ecology, agriculture, forestry, economics, business administration, international politics, or sociology. Annual admission is 40-50 students.; Applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency in accordance with the UMB regulations for programmes taught in English. |
