Programme description Vision and objective:
A main vision of social work is to engage the community in the pursuit of enhanced functioning and development of individuals, families, groups, organisations and communities, and the promotion of peace, human rights, social justice and equality of all people at local, regional, national and international levels. This programme will strive to identify, elaborate and develop challenges and perspectives of special relevance for social work in the Circumpolar region. A deliberative, contextual and comparative approach will be used to comply with particular needs for competence and knowledge. The focus will be on living condition, democratic governance, indigenous and gender issues. More specifically the programme has the following objectivs:

- To develop the students ability to critically analyse and develop social work practice through a comparative approach using different contexts.

- To build competence and qualify people in social work to positions where post-graduate competence is required

- Offer further education at master level to experienced social workers to prepare for leadership and supervision roles.

- Develop social work both as an academic and an applied discipline.

- Provide a basis for increasing the number of applicants for doctoral programmes, thereby increasing the number of doctoral degrees within the field of social work.

- Create good relations between professionals from similar vocational backgrounds.

- Develop contacts and cooperation with educational institutions and research environments both nationally and internationally.

The study provides competence in the following fields:
- Social work practice
- Leadership and supervision within social work
- International social work
- Teaching and research within social work

Study model:
Year one: Compulsory courses (70 ects)
Year two: Master thesis (50 ects)

The Master Programme is organised as a 2-year full-time study, but the period of study can be extended for part-time students. The Programme is given both on and off campus. The lectures will be streamed and delivered flexibly as ICT- courses for those who cannot attend classes on campus. Attendance at lectures is not compulsory except for a one week master thesis seminar.
Application deadline February 1 of the respective year for international applicants. We strongly encourage early applications from students who need a visa to study in Norway.

Formal prerequisites Prerequisite for admission is 3 years of study - Bachelor or equivalent - within a relevant field.

To be admitted to the Master's programme in Social Work, the students' average mark must be C or better (using a scale from A-F, with E as the lowest passing grade).

Students who are not native speakers of English, must document knowledge of English with one of the following tests:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): min. score 500.
- English Language Testing Service (IELTS) test: min. score 5.0.
