Programme description MPhil in Development Studies is a two-year interdisciplinary master programme. It offers electives in a variety of social science disciplines, but specialises in geography. The programme is for students from developing countries and Norwegian students who want to work with development issues. The objective is to provide students with an understanding of the relationships between growth and poverty, state, market and civil society, and globalisation and marginalisation. Who wins and who looses in the developing process? What are the major bottlenecks for a positive change? How can social inclusion be achieved through good governance, participation, empowerment and building on local capabilities? How can we build knowledge that provides a potential for positive societal change? Our students are given experience in independent research and critical thinking. The learning is problem orientated and students have to work on specific issues themselves. Empirical examples, exercises and assignments build on studies and development strategies in the South.
