Master of Science in Well Engineering
Study at the University of Stavanger
Our vision is “to challenge established facts, explore the unknown, gain insight and find wisdom, to benefit society at large and our students and staff.”
In order to realise this vision, we need staff, students and people around us who are curious and hungry for knowledge. We are convinced that a collective commitment to this ambitious vision will help us produce wiser individuals who will be better equipped to meet the future and everyday challenges.
UiS, like all Norwegian higher education institutions, has implemented measures dictated by the Quality Reform. The two main reasons for the reform are achieving improved quality in higher education and research and following up the Bologna's process and Norway's obligations in that regard.

| Programme description |
The department of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Stavanger is at the forefront of petroleum engineering education worldwide. The MSc programme in Well Engineering is uniquely focused on the specific needs of oil and gas exploration and production.
A successful learner from this programme will be able to design and plan different types of wells and well operations, and to analyze and solve different well problems. In addition, individuals will be able to formulate strategies and have the key fundamental knowledge to develop, manage and implement technology within the oil industry. The program, which has been developed in close collaboration with the oil industry, qualifies for a broad range of positions within drilling and production, both operators and service companies. The program also qualifies for other industry where drilling is performed, such as mining, underground water and geothermal applications. |
| Application deadline | The Electronic Application Form is available here between September and November every year (from 01.09.-30.11.). |
| Nokut certification |
Yes (What is this?) |
| Formal prerequisites |
A bachelor degree in Petroleum Engineering or Mechanical Engineering is required. Additionally, all candidates have to document on their academic transcript of records at least 30 ECTS (equivalent to a total workload of 50 percent of an academic year) in mathematics/statistics/calculus of probability.
Please note that sometimes the courses on transcript of records are given as separate and identifiable courses, while other programmes have these disciplines embedded in other courses. Applicants will have to evaluate their own course portfolio and calculate the aggregated sum of credits in these disciplines and evaluate the number of credits obtained in mathematics/statistics/calculus of probability. Please note that this will also be evaluated by the UiS academic staff members as a part of the application process, thus applicants are urged to critically evaluate and estimate credits realistically. Applicants must demonstrate competitive academic standards and top grades. Normally, the level of grades of those that are short listed to master programmes at UiS is equivalent to a Second Class Upper Division or better (80% out of 100%). Applicants with a grade level equivalent to Second Class Lower Division, or lower, will not be considered for admission. Proficiency in English is required. Students who are not english native speakers will have to document their knowledge of English. Please see the information regarding required english tests and minimum scores here. English Language Requirements: All university-level students in Norway must be able to demonstrate their abilities in English. Applicants from European countries who can document a minimum of seven years English training are exempted from further testing. Other applicants should pass one of the following tests: |
