Programme description When you have completed the programme you shall have a good knowledge of the systematics, anatomy, physiology, behaviour, development, life history and ecology or fishes, in addition to oceanography and marine ecosystems.

You shall further have a basic understanding of the population structure of fish stocks, the function and selective properties of fishing gear, exploitation strategies of fish populations from selected ecosystems and simple population dynamic models, in addition to knowledge of how ecological factors in combination with the fishing pressure influence the development of fish stocks.

You will also get practical experience from work in fisheries biology in the laboratory, in the field and on research vessels. You shall also be trained in conducting an independent scientific study based on a material collected in the laboratory or in the field, or based on time series. The thesis could also be based on an extended literature review.

Formal prerequisites You need a completed first degree (bachelor's degree) of at least three years duration from an approved institution of higher education, as well as proficiency in the English language. ; Prerequisites a) Completed a first-degree study of at least three years (B.Sc.) from an approved institution of higher education, or an equivalent background accepted by the University of Bergen. b) Competence in biology corresponding to 60 ECTS (1 year) of introductory biology. c) English proficiency must be documented according to specified requirements.
