Programme description The study track in Biomedical Image Sciences is primarily intended for students with a BSc degree in the exact sciences (physics, informatics, mathematics, statistics) who want to acquire competence in biomedicine and work on biomedical imaging applications. However, students with a BSc degree in biology / life sciences together with a strong interest in exact methodology can also successfully follow the Biomedical Image Sciences program. The curriculum differs from a Masters program in mathematics or in physics in that it is focused on theory and applications in biology and medicine more than the development of new technology, generic methods and algorithms per se that might have potentially a large range of applications.

Biomedical Image Sciences offers a broad collection of courses, both at Department of Biomedicine, Department of Mathematics, Department of Informatics, and Department of Physics and Technology. The study track is also well integrated with the new cross-disciplinary MedViz initiative which is a research &: development consortium between University of Bergen, Haukeland University Hospital, and Christian Michelsen Research AS. The MedViz research cluster is focusing on advanced medical image analysis and visualization in order to bridge the gap between "bench and bedside". This enables students to focus either on (i) a fundamental research project aimed at designing novel methods for a problem-specific image analysis or modeling task in biomedicine, or (ii) an application-oriented project aimed at improving or validating existing imaging methods or perform quantitative analysis of image data from clinical examinations, animal-, or cell experiments, where biological, physiological, pathophysiological, or statistical parameters are to be extracted. The upcoming field of image-based systems biology is also a possible track within the program.
