Programme description The LL.M in Maritime Law focuses on maritime-related commerce under Norwegian and international law. Students build the ability to see practical effects and make comparative analyses of different sets of regulations. The number of participants on the programme is very limited in order to facilitate a close teacher-student interaction also outside classes. The course comprises four terms. The first and third provide regular lecture courses. The second term consists of specialized seminars and a mock trial, while the fourth term is dedicated to the completion of a master thesis. A master programme is not suited for everyone. We consider our working environment to be young of mind, if not of age. This means that, aside from the formal requirements, we are looking for candidates who are outgoing and open-minded; not straight from a learning institution, but with some additional experience as well. To succeed in our programme, candidates must be able to work both independently and together as a team. Students will need to participate actively in class and in social activities, and take responsibility for their own learning process. The Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law forms part of the University of Oslo, and is also supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers, and a number of other sponsors. The main activities of the Institute are teaching and research in Maritime and Transport Law, as well as Petroleum and Energy Law. The professors also maintain a broad activity in general commercial law.
